On Tuesday 12 May we have an outing to Wells with tour of cathedral and Bishop’s Palace. This is now sold out (waiting list only)
Wells is England’s smallest city, renowned for its stunning Gothic cathedral, one of the earliest in England. The stunning mediaeval Bishop’s Palace and Gardens has been home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for over 800 years. Other places of interest include Vicars Close which is reportedly Europe’s oldest, continuously inhabited residential street with the buildings still intact; also, the local museum and a mediaeval marketplace.
The coach will depart Exmouth allowing for some free time before a tour of the cathedral at 12:45 (approx. 1 hour) followed by a visit to the Bishop’s Palace. If you opt not to visit the cathedral and Bishop’s Palace, the day will be your own to do as you wish. The coach will depart at 4:00pm arriving back in Exmouth by 6pm.
Accessibility: The cathedral is largely accessible offering step-free access to the main floor, nave and transepts but some areas of paving have worn unevenly over time. Upper-level tours would not be accessible, though. Wheelchairs can be borrowed by contacting the Visitor Services team on T: 01749 671663. There are accessible toilets and the café is accessible via a lift. The pavements in the city centre are of uneven natural stone with some areas cobbled. The shops vary from mediaeval to modern buildings. There is more information at: www.wellssomerset.com/accessible-wells.
