Mahjong Beginners – Tiles in Typical Set
- Top row is the 'Bamboo' suit from 1 to 9. Note that 1 bamboo tile is unusual as a bird on a branch.
- Middle row is the 'Circles' suit.
- Bottom row is the 'Characters' suit. Easy to confuse the 3 and 8 tiles if you don't have your glasses on.
- The 1 and 9 of each suit are 'major' tiles and score double of the 'minor' tiles 2 to 8.
- Top row are the three 'Dragons' - red, white and green.
- Bottom row are the four 'Winds'
- These are 'major' tiles for scoring purposes and unrelated/wild to the three suits above.
- The letters on the 'Dragon' tiles in a typical Western set are initials of the Chinese words so not useful to us.
- Top row are the four 'Flowers' - Plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo.
- Bottom row are the four 'Seasons' - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
- These bonus tiles should always be immediately declared/shown and replaced in your hand.
- They score 4 points each and may add doubling to your final score.
