Article from Tidelines: Salmon Run, Saturday 20 September

Did you know that the Atlantic Salmon is central to the River Exe’s history and culture? Its name is derived from Isca: an ancient British word meaning ‘river full of fish’. The abundance of the species sustained fisheries along the river, and salmon are depicted in carvings in Exeter Cathedral.

Now the salmon is in trouble. In the past, thousands completed an epic transatlantic journey up the Exe to spawn each year. Now numbers are in the hundreds or fewer and the species is officially classed as 'endangered'. Threats include climate change, pollution, lack of food at sea, and the many weirs blocking their journey along the river.

The Salmon Run took place on Saturday 20 September and is an annual event organised by Tidelines to celebrate this iconic species and raise awareness of its plight and how we can help it.

It’s centred round a community relay run. Teams of runners carried a salmon icon from the Exmouth to Exmoor, re-enacting the salmon’s migratory journey as they travel upriver.

A festival, Salmon Run: The Gathering,at Sideshore in Exmouth with Thelma Hulbert Gallery and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Outreach, Westcountry Rivers Trust and others offered talks, creative workshops, games and information. At Dulverton the Exmouth National Park Authority and Friends of the River Exe hosted river water testing and other activities.
